Some freshwater pearls are formed from inside mussels when a shell protects itself by surrounding any unwanted materials like sand or parasites in a mother of pearl substance called nacre. It then grows into beautifully coloured pearls inside the shell. It’s the shell protecting itself. What a lovely byproduct of self healing.
